THE KINGDOM l

Denmark

The Kingdom IThe largest hospital in Denmark, ‘The Kingdom’, is a setting for strange events. The high-tech center, a metaphor of modern society, is transformed slowly and subtly into a scenario for ‘powers from beyond’. It all began in 1919, when Dr. Krüger murdered his illegitimate daughter Mary. Decades later, people began to hear cries for help from the girl, and strange things began to happen – employees hear messages from an misterious ambulance, a ghost visits the surgery rooms, and frightening sounds are heard in the elevators. A sensitive patient wants to bring Mary's spirit rest, and a doctor finds out that she is pregnant from a reincarnation of Dr. Krüger. Meanwhile, a doctor does all he can to get hold of a contaminated liver for his research. Originally, made as a TV series in four episodes.

Lars Von Trier

Born in 1956. Graduated in 1983 from the School of Cinema in Denmark and is acknowledged as the most admired and creative filmmaker in his country. Inspite of the success, he is subject to a radical phobia: he will never travel by plane. He directed Nocturne (1981) and Images of Relief (1982), his graduation films. His first feature The Element of Crime (1984), shown at the Ninth São Paulo International Film Festival) was followed by Epidemic (1987) and Medea (telefilm of 1988), and Europa (1991), Kingdom I (Eighteenth Film Festival), Breaking the Waves (1996),
and Kingdom II.
