| THE SCAR | Poland |
A large chemical
complex is about to be installed in a small Polish town. After considerable argument and
dishonest negotiations, a decision is made as to the site of the construction. The person chosen to carry out building operations is Bednarz who has lived on the site where his wife was a political activist. He does not have good memories of this time and is reluctant to return to the city. Bednarz is a strong man, firm and honest. He is convinced that his energy and determination will be sufficient to direct the project without commitments and in the certainty that this will be a place where people may live and work happily. Things, however, do not work out as the director would have liked. The inhabitants of the city are not in agreement as to his decisions. They are concerned only with the facts of day-to-day living, without a vision of the future. We are in the year 1970. Bednarz eventually resigns. Everything works out contrary to what had been planned. In fact, he does not feel guilty, but rather is convinced that he did not carry out his plan to the end. And one thought torments him: can it be possible to make headway in the social field without giving way to pressures from the various parties involved, without betraying his own conscience, and without committing himself with undesirable factions? And is it possible to live with a vision of the future when one is surrounded by the cruel day-to-day reality? This is the original text written by Kieslowski for The Scar. And these are the disquieting issues that are revealed by the first film by Master Krysztof Kieslowski, work condemned, censured and prohibited. The author did not live to see the film circulating freely worldwide. |
